Lithograph

A method for printing on a smooth surface, invented by Bavarian author Alois Senefelder in 1796. It can be used to print text or artwork onto paper or another suitable material. The procedure is based on the chemical fact that water and oil don’t mix. The surface from which it is printed is flat. The image is drawn on a polished plate of limestone. Later, this stone is treated with chemicals and dampened with water, so that the oil based printing ink, when rolled on, will adhere only on the lines, which has been drawn. It is very appreciated, because you can create a variety of lines and painterly effects.
